Why Organisations Are Migrating
The most common driver by far is licensing cost and structure changes on the VMware side since the Broadcom acquisition — per-core bundled licensing with higher minimum core counts has pushed total cost of ownership up sharply for a lot of mid-sized environments, especially those that were on perpetual licenses and now face subscription-only renewal. Hyper-V’s licensing is bundled with Windows Server, which for shops already standardised on Windows Server elsewhere in the estate, is a meaningfully simpler cost model.

- Migrate in waves, not all at once — validate a handful of representative VMs (different OS versions, different workload types) before committing to the full estate
- Check guest OS driver compatibility ahead of time; some older guest integration services need updating post-migration
- Plan your target Hyper-V networking (virtual switches, VLANs) before the first migration wave, not during it
- Keep the source VMware VMs powered off but intact for a rollback window after cutover, rather than deleting immediately

On raw scale, the platforms are now close — Hyper-V’s Windows Server 2025 limits (2,048 vCPUs, 240 TB memory per VM) are comparable to or exceed vSphere’s equivalents for the vast majority of workloads. Where VMware still has a maturity edge is in its broader third-party ecosystem and some advanced storage/networking features built up over two decades.
