Getting DOSBox

Download the latest version from the official DOSBox project page on SourceForge — it’s free, open source, and actively maintained.

Basic Setup

After installing, DOSBox needs to be told which folder on your real filesystem to “mount” as a DOS drive before it can see your program:
mount c C:\DOSGames
c:
Run this from the DOSBox command window each time you start it (or automate it via DOSBox’s configuration file so it happens automatically), then launch your DOS program or game as you normally would from a DOS prompt. Performance, sound, and graphics all emulate reliably for the vast majority of DOS-era software.

DOSBox Staging: The More Actively Maintained Option (2026)

Worth knowing before you download anything: the classic SourceForge-hosted DOSBox project still exists but sees only sporadic updates today, and most of the community’s development effort has moved to forks. DOSBox Staging is the generally recommended pick for most people now — it’s an independent, actively developed continuation, explicitly separate from and not supported by the original SourceForge project, and it ships with much more sensible defaults out of the box. In practice that means less manual configuration-file editing than the setup above: most games and applications just run once mounted, without needing the classic version’s typical round of config tweaking. If you specifically need maximum hardware accuracy — extended platform emulation, debugging features, or edge-case compatibility with unusual DOS-era hardware setups — DOSBox-X is the other actively maintained fork worth knowing about, though DOSBox Staging covers the vast majority of general use cases with less setup effort.
