The old approach of copying game files out of a Windows 7 install and dropping them onto a newer OS doesn’t reliably work anymore — those old executables are 32-bit and depend on OS components that current Windows doesn’t ship the same way. The good news is you don’t need to: Microsoft still officially distributes updated versions of the classics through the Microsoft Store, and there are solid open-source alternatives if you’d rather skip the Store entirely.

Option 1: Microsoft Solitaire Collection (Store app)

This is Microsoft’s own modern replacement for the classic Solitaire/FreeCell/Spider Solitaire trio, distributed as a free Microsoft Store app with ads (removable via a Microsoft 365 subscription or a one-time in-app purchase, if that matters to you).

  1. Open the Microsoft Store, search Microsoft Solitaire Collection.
  2. Install — it’s free, no Microsoft account required to play locally, though signing in syncs stats/achievements across devices.

It includes Klondike Solitaire, Spider, FreeCell, Pyramid, and TriPeaks — a broader set of variants than the original Windows 7 game pack shipped with.

Option 2: Microsoft Minesweeper (Store app)

Same story — free Store app, modernised but recognisable, with the same core rules as the classic version.

  1. Microsoft Store, search Microsoft Minesweeper.
  2. Install and play — classic difficulty levels (Beginner/Intermediate/Expert) are all present alongside newer modes.

Option 3: Open-source classic recreations (no Store, no ads, closest to the original)

If you specifically want the exact original look and feel without Microsoft’s modernised UI or ads, there are actively maintained open-source recreations:

  • Pixel-accurate open-source Solitaire and Minesweeper clones exist on GitHub and can be built or downloaded as standalone .exe files — search for the specific project by name rather than a generic download, and verify the source (GitHub releases page, not a random mirror site) before running anything on your machine, same as with any downloaded executable.
  • These typically run as portable single-file executables with no install needed, closely matching the Windows 7-era visuals people specifically miss.

If you’re trying to run the actual old Windows 7 game files

If you have the original .exe/.dll files from a Windows 7 install and want to try running them directly rather than using a modern replacement: they’re 32-bit applications, so they’ll only run on a 64-bit Windows 11 install (which supports 32-bit apps by default) rather than an ARM64 install without x86 emulation support. Compatibility isn’t guaranteed even then — the original games depended on specific DirectX and system DLL versions that current Windows doesn’t ship identically, so if they don’t launch, right-click the executable, choose Properties > Compatibility, and try running in Windows 7 compatibility mode before giving up on them — this resolves it for some but not all of the original game files.
