Windows 10 Technical Preview — Where Things Stand Now

This post originally covered downloading the early Windows 10 Technical Preview, back when Microsoft first opened up public pre-release testing in late 2014 ahead of Windows 10’s general release in July 2015. That preview programme — and the specific evaluation builds and keys that went with it — has long since been retired, so if you’ve landed here looking for a working technical preview download today, it won’t get you anywhere. If you want to try pre-release Windows builds now, the current route is the Windows Insider Program, which replaced the old one-off Technical Preview model with an ongoing set of Dev, Beta, and Release Preview channels you can enrol a device into directly from Windows Update settings. If you’re instead just looking to get hold of Windows 10 itself: Windows 10 reached its own end of support on 14 October 2025, so Microsoft’s current guidance for most people is to move to Windows 11 where the hardware supports it, or to look at Extended Security Updates (ESU) if you need more time on Windows 10 for a specific reason. Genuine installation media for supported Windows versions is available from Microsoft’s official software download site using an existing product key or Microsoft account entitlement.

Where Things Stand Right Now (Updated for 2026)

A quick further update on both fronts mentioned above: the Windows Insider Program itself has just been restructured — as of a June 2026 change, the old separate Dev and Canary channels are being consolidated into a new Experimental Channel (the earliest, most bleeding-edge tier, including a “Future Platforms” build), sitting alongside the existing Beta and Release Preview channels. You may still see the old channel names for a while as the rollout completes, but Experimental is the one to pick if you want what Dev/Canary used to offer. And to reconfirm the Windows 10 point: consumer Extended Security Updates remain available for free via 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points (or free if you sync your PC settings to the cloud, or a one-time $30 payment otherwise), covering security updates through 12 October 2027.
