How Office Activation Works in 2026 (LTSC 2024, Microsoft 365, Retail)

— how you activate Office depends entirely on which of three licence types you have. Here’s how each one actually works.

Microsoft 365 Apps (subscription) — no product key at all

If you’re on a Microsoft 365 subscription (personal, family, or business), there’s no product key to enter, full stop. Activation is tied to signing in:

1. Install via office.com > Install apps (see our Office 2024 / Microsoft 365 install guide for the full walkthrough).
2. Open any Office app and sign in with the Microsoft account (personal) or work/school account the subscription is attached to.
3. Office checks the subscription status against that account every time it needs to re-validate — usually every 30 days, silently, as long as the device has internet access occasionally.

If activation lapses (subscription cancelled, or the device hasn’t checked in for a while), Office drops into reduced-functionality mode rather than refusing to open files — you can still view and print, but editing and creating are blocked until it re-validates.

Office LTSC 2024 (perpetual/volume licence) — key or account, depending on channel

This is the closest modern equivalent to the old Office 2016 retail-key experience, but the actual mechanism depends on how it was purchased:

• Retail LTSC 2024 (Home & Business, Home & Student boxed/download versions): activation is account-based, same as Microsoft 365 — sign in with the Microsoft account the licence is tied to via office.com > Install apps. There typically isn’t a 25-character key to type in manually; the purchase is linked to the account automatically at checkout.
• Volume-licensed LTSC 2024 (organisations buying through Volume Licensing): activation uses KMS (Key Management Service) for large deployments that re-activate periodically against an internal KMS host, or MAK (Multiple Activation Key) for a one-time activation against Microsoft’s servers, counted against a fixed pool of activations. Which one your organisation uses depends on how the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) deployment was configured — check with whoever manages your organisation’s VLSC account if you’re not sure which applies.

Checking your current activation status

From any Office app: File > Account, and look under Product Information. It will show either “Subscription Product” with the plan name (Microsoft 365) or “Licensed Product” with the edition name (LTSC), plus an activation status (Activated / Unlicensed Product / needs attention).

From Command Prompt, for a more detailed volume-licensing view:

(Adjust the Office16 path if your install uses a different version folder — this works the same for LTSC 2021 and 2024 installs.) This shows the licence type, partial product key, and activation/KMS status directly.

If you’re migrating from an old retail key you still have

A genuine, unused retail product key from an older perpetual Office version (2016, 2019, 2021) generally still redeems through office.com > Enter a product key if you have leftover unused licences, though Microsoft has been steadily narrowing which older SKUs remain redeemable this way — if a key from that era won’t redeem, that’s expected rather than a fault on your end, since older standalone SKUs are progressively being phased out of the self-service redemption flow.
