“How much RAM do I need” gets answered badly because the honest answer is “it depends”, and nobody wants to write that. So here is the actual dependency: it’s about how many things you keep open at once, not how demanding any single one of them is.

A single game rarely needs more than 16GB. A game plus Chrome with forty tabs plus Discord plus a stream running is a different question entirely — and that’s the situation most people are actually in.

Find out what you’re actually using first

Before buying anything, look at real numbers from your own machine. Open Task Manager, go to the Performance tab, click Memory, and — this is the important bit — check it while you’re mid-work, not on a fresh boot. Everything open, the way you actually use the machine.

Two figures matter more than “in use”:

  • Committed — shown as something like “24/32GB”. If the first number regularly approaches the second, you’re short.
  • Cached — memory holding recently used data. This is good. Unused RAM is wasted RAM; a large cache is Windows doing its job.

High “in use” on its own isn’t a problem. Windows will happily fill available memory because that’s faster than not using it. What indicates a genuine shortage is heavy disk activity when you switch between applications — that’s paging, and it’s the thing that actually feels slow.

The pattern: 16GB is the floor, 32GB covers almost everyone, and above 32GB you should have a specific reason. Buying 64GB “to be safe” for gaming is money that would do more good in the GPU.

Capacity beats speed, mostly

Given a fixed budget, more capacity generally beats faster memory. Running out of RAM forces the system to page to disk, which is catastrophic for responsiveness. Slightly slower RAM costs you a few percent.

The exception is AMD’s Ryzen chips, which are more sensitive to memory speed than Intel’s. Even then, sensible mainstream DDR5 with EXPO enabled captures most of the benefit — chasing extreme kits has poor returns.

Two sticks, not four

For a given capacity, two sticks is the better choice. Four sticks put more strain on the memory controller and often can’t sustain the same rated speed, particularly on DDR5. Two 16GB sticks for 32GB, not four 8GB.

And fit them in the correct slots — usually the second and fourth from the CPU. The manual specifies it, and getting it wrong silently drops you to single channel.

  1. Check what you have: Task Manager, Performance, Memory shows type, speed and slots used.
  2. Check the maximum your motherboard supports, and how many slots are free.
  3. Prefer replacing over mixing. Mismatched kits run at the slowest common speed and sometimes refuse to train at all.
  4. Fit the new sticks in the slots the manual specifies for two-stick operation.
  5. Enable EXPO or XMP in firmware afterwards — new RAM defaults to base speed.
  6. Run a memory test overnight before trusting it. Windows Memory Diagnostic will do; MemTest86 is more thorough.

On laptops, check whether the memory is soldered before ordering anything. A growing number of thin machines have no upgradeable slots at all, and some have one soldered bank plus one slot.

Only if you’re running out. Going from 8GB to 16GB on a machine that pages constantly is transformative. Going from 32GB to 64GB when you never exceed 20GB changes nothing at all.

Can I mix different RAM brands or speeds?
