Group Policy Templates: Building an Admin Catalog

Group Policy is one of the most powerful tools available to IT departments for enforcing consistent settings across a domain — but the built-in Windows policies are only part of the picture. Vendors including Google, Mozilla, and Adobe publish their own ADMX administrative template files, letting you manage their products through the same Group Policy Management Console you already use for Windows.

Finding what’s available

Between Microsoft’s own policies and third-party ADMX templates, the total number of settings available is large enough that even experienced GPO administrators regularly discover policies they didn’t know existed. Using the catalog

Browse the catalog, click into any policy to see exactly what it controls and what values it accepts, then download and import the relevant ADMX (and matching ADML language) files into your Central Store or local Group Policy Management Console. Once imported, the new policies appear alongside the built-in Windows ones under Administrative Templates, ready to configure and link like any other GPO setting.

A specific example: Firefox

Mozilla publishes an official ADMX template package for managing Firefox via Group Policy — covering things like default homepage, extension allow/block lists, update behaviour, and security settings. It’s a straightforward download-and-import, and is the standard way to manage Firefox configuration at scale in a domain environment rather than relying on per-machine settings.
