As a general rule, Outlook 2016 was supported against fairly recent Exchange Server releases (Exchange 2016, 2013, and 2010 with the relevant service packs/updates applied) at the time it shipped, along with Exchange Online. Very old Exchange versions (2007 and earlier) were not supported with Outlook 2016. Worth being direct about this rather than leaving it as a hypothetical: Office 2016 (and Office 2019) reached end of support on 14 October 2025, so an Outlook 2016 install now receives no further security or bug fixes at all. On the Exchange Online side specifically, Microsoft fully retired Basic Authentication back in September 2024 — Outlook 2016 has to be on Modern (OAuth2) Authentication to connect at all, and Microsoft’s own minimum-build policy for Microsoft 365 connectivity already required Outlook 2013 SP1 or later with reasonably current updates, a bar an unpatched, unsupported Outlook 2016 install is drifting further below with each passing month. Microsoft doesn’t guarantee continued functionality for out-of-support clients, so if you’re still planning a fresh Office 2016 rollout in 2026 rather than maintaining an existing one, it’s worth reconsidering in favour of a currently-supported Microsoft 365 Apps or Office LTSC release.
