Upgrade to Windows 10 for Free [2020 Updated]

Introduction

When Windows 10 was first released, Microsoft offered it for free to Windows 7 and 8 OEM customers. This was a limited time offer which did finish a while ago. However, what you may not know is that Microsoft actually still offer Windows 10 to OEM customers for free.

Conditions

To qualify for the free upgrade, you need to be running a fully licensed and activated copy of Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 Home or Pro.

This means that you are upgrading an existing OEM license rather than a fresh new installation of Windows 10.

Installation Tool

The first thing you will need to do is to download the installation tool. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Go to the Windows 10 website here
  • Under Create Windows 10 installation media, click Download tool now:

This will now download the upgrade tool to your machine. Run this file and a new box will pop up with Getting a few things ready message:

You will then be asked to accept the license terms and conditions:

You then have the option to Upgrade this PC now or Create installation media for another PC:

You can choose to upgrade the PC you are on, but for the purposes of this guide, we will create the installation media.

You should then select your language, edition and architecture for the machine you want to upgrade:

Then choose whether you want to use a USB flash drive or an ISO file:

Downloading Windows 10

Once you have made all your selections, the tool will now go off and download the files required for your selections:

Once this process has completed, you can go ahead and use this media to upgrade your Windows to version 10.
