The disk is write-protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk.this is almost always the disk’s write-protect attribute being set at the storage controller level, and
diskpart built into Windows can clear it.
The Fix
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Type
diskpartand press Enter. list disk— identify the correct disk by size. Be certain, since the next commands affect this disk directly.select disk #(replace # with the disk number)attributes disk clear readonly- Retry formatting the disk normally through Disk Management or
formatfrom diskpart.
Still the Same Fix on Windows 11 (Updated for 2026)
diskpart and the attributes disk clear readonly command work identically on current Windows 11 releases — this is a low-level disk-attribute mechanism that hasn’t changed. If clear readonly reports success but the disk still shows as write-protected in Disk Management afterwards, try removing and reinserting the drive (or a full reboot for an internal disk) before assuming the fix didn’t take — Windows sometimes caches the old disk state until the device is re-enumerated.
