If System Center Updates Publisher (SCUP) crashes on launch — the splash screen fades out and an error dialog appears with no way into the console — it’s almost always a corrupted local database rather than a broken installation.
The Fix
- Close SCUP completely if it’s still open.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to:
C:Users%username%AppDataLocalMicrosoftSystem Center Updates Publisher 2011
- Rename that folder (for example to
System Center Updates Publisher 2011.old) rather than deleting it outright, in case you want to recover any custom catalog settings later.
- Launch SCUP again.
SCUP will recreate a fresh local database folder on startup, and the console should now open normally. Note that this resets any locally cached catalog subscriptions and custom software update settings stored in that profile folder, so you may need to re-add any third-party catalogs (Adobe, Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.) you had previously subscribed to.
