Missing Windows 10 Desktop Wallpaper Fix

How to fix the Windows 10 Desktop Wallpaper Disappearing Problem

Missing Windows 10 Desktop Wallpaper Fix

A blank or default desktop background after login — even though the wallpaper is still set correctly in Settings — is usually a corrupted wallpaper cache rather than a missing file.

Fix 1 — Clear the Wallpaper Cache

  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes.
  2. Delete the TranscodedWallpaper file and the contents of the CachedFiles subfolder.
  3. Right-click the desktop, choose Personalize, and re-select your wallpaper (or reselect it from Settings > Personalization > Background).

Fix 2 — Confirm the Source File Still Exists

If the wallpaper is set to a specific picture file, check that the file hasn’t been moved, renamed, or deleted — Windows will silently fall back to a black or default background if it can’t find the source image.

Fix 3 — Check for a Slideshow Setting

Under Settings > Personalization > Background, if “Picture” isn’t selected (for example if it’s set to “Slideshow” pointing at an empty or inaccessible folder), the desktop can appear blank. Switching back to “Picture” and selecting a valid image resolves it.

If none of the above helps, running sfc /scannow from an elevated Command Prompt will catch cases where a corrupted system file is involved.

Still Applies on Windows 11 (Updated for 2026)

The same %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes cache location and clearing steps work identically on Windows 11 — the wallpaper cache mechanism hasn’t changed. If you’re troubleshooting this on a machine that’s still on Windows 10, keep in mind Windows 10 reached the end of free support on 14 Oct 2025; ESU-enrolled devices aren’t affected for this specific issue, but if you’re due an upgrade anyway, the fix carries straight over to Windows 11 with no changes.
