iPhone Earpiece Volume Low: Fixing Quiet Call Audio

If calls on an iPhone sound very quiet through the earpiece specifically — while Bluetooth and speakerphone audio are both fine — the cause is very likely a setting called Phone Noise Cancellation rather than a hardware fault.

What’s happening

Apple introduced Phone Noise Cancellation from iOS 7 onward. It’s meant to reduce background noise on calls, but on some devices and iOS versions it has the side effect of making earpiece audio sound muffled and unusually low in volume.

The fix

1. Open Settings > Accessibility (on older iOS versions this was under General > Accessibility).
2. Scroll to the Hearing section (sometimes labelled Hearing Devices or Audio/Visual depending on iOS version).
3. Find Phone Noise Cancellation and turn it off.

Make a test call afterwards to confirm the earpiece volume has improved.

If the feature was already off

If Phone Noise Cancellation is already disabled and you’re still getting low call volume through the earpiece, the more likely cause at that point is physical debris — dust, lint, or pocket fluff — blocking the earpiece speaker grille. Gently clean it with a soft, dry brush (an unused toothbrush works well) or a lint-free cloth; avoid poking anything into the speaker opening itself. Between the software setting and a physical clean, this covers the two most common causes of quiet earpiece calls — a genuine hardware fault at the speaker itself is comparatively rare.

Still Current on iOS in 2026

Phone Noise Cancellation remains available under the same name, though its location has shifted slightly with recent iOS versions — Accessibility is now a top-level item in Settings rather than living under General, so the path today is Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Phone Noise Cancellation. If toggling it off and cleaning the earpiece grille both don’t help, two other causes worth checking on current iPhones: a Bluetooth accessory that’s stuck “half-connected” and quietly routing audio away from the earpiece even though it’s not visibly paired for the call, and Hearing Aid/Live Listen compatibility mode being left on, which can also affect earpiece output level.
