Adding an Outlook.com / Hotmail / Live.com Account (Current Method)
- In Outlook, go to File > Add Account.
- Enter your full email address and click Connect.
- Outlook detects it’s a Microsoft consumer account and opens a browser-based Microsoft sign-in window.
- Enter your password in that browser window (not in Outlook itself) and complete multi-factor authentication if you have it enabled.
- Once sign-in completes, control returns to Outlook and the account finishes setting up automatically — mail, calendar, and contacts sync without any manual server settings.
If Outlook Doesn’t Support Modern Authentication Yet
A small minority of very old Outlook installations predate Microsoft’s modern-auth requirement and need updating first. If you’re on Microsoft 365 Apps, this isn’t a concern — it stays current automatically. If you’re on a perpetual-licence build (Outlook 2016/2019/2021), make sure it’s on at least the minimum update level Microsoft requires for modern auth (Outlook 2021 LTSC build 11601.10000 or later, or the June 2024 update or later for Outlook 2016/2021 volume-licensed builds) via File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now.Resources
