You may have noticed if you are a regular user of Reddit that although you can copy and paste a standard YouTube video URL into the Link part of a new post to embed the video, you cannot do the same with a YouTube shorts video.
When posting a standard YouTube, you just use the normal URL like this:
Then when you post the link, the video automatically embeds itself as a video that you can play directly from the subreddit post:
If you do try and post a short video, you will notice that the link is a different format to the standard video URL. The Short video has the normal www.youtube.com URL but then has “shorts” and then the ID of your shorts video.
If you post that URL as a link to a subreddit, all you will get in the post is the link, no embed will show:
Now we know that just posting a YouTube shorts URL to a subreddit link post will not embed the video, how do we embed the shorts video?
Embed a YouTube Shorts Video
The solution is very simple. All YouTube videos are just standard video uploads to begin with. If your upload is longer than 60 seconds, that video will get categorised as a shorts video.
YouTube then changes the given URL from a standard to a \shorts\ URL. But the original video still has its standard YouTube URL available to you that you can use to embed the video into a subreddit.
Method 1
This may sound a bit confusing, but there is a very simple way of dealing with it. As above in our screenshots, we will take this Sabrina Carpenter short and grab the shorts URL:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/EITxh_96SC0
Now what we want to do is to remove the
/shorts/
and replace it with
watch?v=
This will then give you a standard YouTube video URL:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EITxh_96SC0
Method 2
Still a little confused? Well there is an even simpler method. Take the shorts video ID, which is the last part of the video URL, in this case is:
EITxh_96SC0
You then need to take the first part of the URL which will always be this, so you can use this as a template:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=
Then just add the video ID to the end of the URL so you get this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EITxh_96SC0
You can then copy and paste this URL in Reddit as a Link post and it will embed like below:
YouTube Short Video Embedded on Reddit
So this is the link you add:
Then the outcome will be this YouTube Short Video embedded on Reddit.
Conclusion
I don’t personally understand when this is not just a simple feature like it is with a standard video, but it isn’t at the time of this post anyway, but at least it is possible and this workaround shows you exactly how to do it.
