I have recently been testing out the XGIMI Halo+ Portable Projector. I’ve got a bit of a thing for these portable projectors as their quality, the standard of design, and usability of them have increased hugely over the last few years. Being able to carry something small and relatively light enables me to travel around with it and watch pretty much whatever I want, whether it be whilst I’m working away from home or visiting family and friends.
In a time when most people have a large TV, it’s quite impressive being able to fire up a projector and immediately provide a much bigger viewing area to watch films or sports with your friends!

Packaging
The parcel arrived very quickly with a courier and was extremely well packaged, with a smaller box within a larger box and full air packaging around the actual product box. This has ensured that the product box is in off-the-shelf, brand-new condition when you receive it.
Once unpacked from its delivery packaging, inside the product box you find it well-packed with the following items included:
- Projector Unit
- Two-Part Power Pack (UK 3-pin DC plug)
- Remote Control (Requires 2 x AAA Batteries Not Included)
- Instruction Manual
- FAQ Manual
- Warranty
Projector Unit
The projector unit itself is a good sturdy design and happily sits on most surfaces whilst maintaining a perfectly steady image. The unit has ports for power, USB, HDMI, and audio, for me, the HDMI port is the most important as I can plug in my laptop to it or use it with my Xbox to play games as well.
The projector is a nice portable size (see measurements) and lightweight at only 1.6kgs, meaning that it’s easy enough to pack into your bags and take with you when traveling. It would be extremely convenient if used when camping, just fire it up and use the built-in Android TV to watch almost anything you want.
Battery
The unit also has a built-in battery so you can charge it up before you do go anywhere without having to plug it in to use it. The battery life is around 2 and a half hours from fully charged using its 59W battery.
Automatic Setting Features
The projector comes with Auto Keystone Correction, Auto Focus, Intelligent Screen Alignment, and Intelligent Obstacle Avoidance. I wasn’t sure what most of this was either, but it sounded impressive! Below is a little bit of detail about each of these features.
Auto Keystone Correction
Position the Halo+ projector directly in front of the wall or screen that you are using, or at vertical/horizontal +/-40° angles and watch as it automatically adjusts its projected display to the ideal square image.
See this in action in this demo video:
Auto Focus
The Auto Focus feature keeps your display clear and your viewing experience uninterrupted. No more messing around twiddling the focus to try to get it right, this is all automated with the Halo+ almost immediately. See it in action below:
Intelligent Screen Alignment
This is a new feature to me and very impressive. With Intelligent Screen Alignment, Halo+ automatically matches its image with any screen size without having to move the projector all around hoping you get it correct. The best way to show this is in the video demo below:
Intelligent Obstacle Avoidance
This is the most impressive feature on the Halo+ projector for me. Intelligent Obstacle Avoidance is when you are projecting onto a surface, for the sake of an example, let’s us a wall with picture frames on it. The project will see the picture frame as an “obstacle” and “avoid” it! Again, the best way to show this is by a video demo as is here:
Halo+ boots up and automatically adjusts your display settings in seconds, no waiting around and fiddling with the settings to try and get it correct – it does it all for you.
Speakers & Sound
The projector itself has two speakers with 5W of power made by one of the best speaker companies in the world – Harman/Kardon. The speakers provide DTS-HD & DTS and Dolby Audio quality sound. I have tested them out with a normal film, computer game and a Taylor Swift concert (see further on…) and the sound was really impressive coming from a projector.
Remote Control
The remote control is of a thin and lightweight design, very modern with buttons for source, settings, volume, power, and focusing the projector when required.
You can also use it to navigate through all the streaming TV services available to you through this projector.
It does require two AAA batteries which are not included with the projector.
Streaming Apps
With this having Android TV built into it, it opens up the entire Google Play Store for you to install apps. The obvious ones like HBO, Disney+, YouTube and Hulu are all available to install and use with this projector. You can even cast from your Android phone to the projector.
Here is an example of the list of apps – please note that my projector screen is new and creased, if you are going to use a projector screen, you should ensure that it is stretched out and avoid creasing for better quality. However, you can also use this projector against a white wall as well, I just don’t happen to have any free white walls in my house!
I tested out a few of the apps, including Plex and I also tested out streaming the BBC iPlayer:
This means that you can turn on your projector, log in to your streaming account and sit and binge-watch films and TV programs with a huge screen or remotely wherever you may be!
Gaming
I set up the projector in my front room and got my Xbox Series S connected to it using the HDMI port. Using the automatic features of the projector, it set up and configured itself almost immediately. I’m playing Forza Horizon 5 at the moment and I thought this would be a really good test for the projector due to the quick movement of the cars and landscape in the game.
It handled it just like my TV, with no lag, no rainbowing of the image, simply just like a large 100-inch TV! This is due to the imaging technology that the projector has to help provide an excellent picture, these include:
- HDR 10+ enhanced color contrast
- MEMC motion compensation
- X-VUE 2.0 (Clarity enhancement, Color revivification, Image noise reduction)
- Diffuse reflection imaging for low blue light
- Gaming Mode Boost – Low latency down to 26.5ms and incredible refresh rates
World Cup 2022
With the World Cup 2022 in Qatar finally upon us, there is no better place than to watch it with your friends and family around a huge screen. A portable projector gives you just that, you can have it set up in your house or garden, or if you don’t want everyone making a mess of your own house – just pack it up and take it to someone else’s house! With the Halo+ it gives you the flexibility to do and watch whatever you want with it.
Image Quality
Having used the projector to watch the football and play Forza 5 through my Xbox, I’m really impressed with the image quality. It really is excellent with the Halo+ and I’ll be using it to watch all the World Cup matches I can! You forget that it is a projector with all the automated features to give you the best quality focusing and layout, paired with the 900 lumens ANSI Full High Definition output, it really doesn’t get much better.
To hopefully try and show the image and sound quality, I recorded a clip from the projector using just my Android phone, so no fancy recording equipment or anything like that, just the projector, my creased screen and Samsung Galaxy S21!

Conclusion
Like I stated at the beginning of this review, I am really into these portable projectors at the moment and this Halo+ one is definitely one of the best ones I used. The image and sound quality are so good now that they are excellent for travelers but are also getting really close to being a television replacement, especially with the consumer demand for larger and larger TV’s.
Overall, I would definitely recommend buying a Halo+ projector. If you are looking for something like this for traveling or just as a gadget in the house, the prices are reasonable and the quality is high, so what more could you want?
