Step 1: Make your profile public
Insights only works on public profiles. To check or change this:- Open the Instagram app and go to Settings > Privacy > Account Privacy.
- Turn off Private Account.
Step 2: Switch to a Professional account
Insights is a feature of Instagram’s free Professional account tier (this replaced the older separate “Business account” terminology). Setting it up doesn’t change how your personal profile looks or behaves — it just unlocks analytics:- Go to Settings > Account > Switch to Professional Account.
- Follow the prompts — you’ll be asked to pick a category that describes your account, and whether to display it publicly.
Step 3: View your data
Once you’re set up, insight data starts appearing for new posts, reels and stories going forward (it won’t retroactively generate data for older posts). You’ll find it via the Insights link on your profile, or by tapping the bar-chart icon on individual posts, and it breaks down reach, impressions, and profile visits alongside the likes and comments you could already see.Still Accurate in 2026
Confirmed directly against Instagram’s own current Help Center documentation: Insights remains a public-profile-only feature — a private account still won’t get Insights data no matter how it’s otherwise configured, so Step 1 above (turning off Private Account) is still a hard requirement, not just a recommendation. “Professional account” also remains the correct current umbrella term, with “business” and “creator” as the two sub-types underneath it, matching the flow described above. One thing worth knowing if you’re new to Insights: Instagram’s own documentation currently describes some of the newer metrics (views, accounts reached, accounts engaged) as still being gradually rolled out and refined for certain content types, so don’t be surprised if numbers look like estimates or take a little longer to populate for brand-new posts.Resources
